The Testarossa entered production in 1984 as the successor to the 512 BB. Its name, meaning "red head" in Italian, comes from the twelve-cylinder engine's red-painted cam covers and pays homage to the 250 Testa Rossa race car. The engine displaces 4943 cm³, features four valves per cylinder, and produces 287 kW at 6300 rpm; 0 to 100 km/h takes 5.8 seconds, with top speed estimated at 290 km/h. Pininfarina penned the bodywork, and Scaglietti built it in Modena. Through 1991, 7177 units were produced.

Engine and drivetrain

The longitudinally mounted twelve-cylinder features dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder (48 in total), and dry-sump lubrication. The compression ratio is 9.30:1, and peak torque is 490 Nm at 4500 rpm. Early US versions produced 283 kW. The entire powertrain along with the suspension could be removed as a single unit from below to allow servicing of the engine and timing belts.

Wheels and chassis

At launch, the Testarossa featured magnesium center-lock wheels and Michelin TRX tires sized 240/45 VR 415 at the front and 280/45 VR 415 at the rear. Starting with the 1986 model year, conventional 16-inch wheels were introduced, though the US remained on TRX wheels until 1989. In mid-1988, the suspension was revised and switched to Ferrari's standard five-lug bolt pattern. The brake discs measure 309 mm front and 310 mm rear.

The press praised the car, yet in comparison tests it lost to the Lamborghini Countach, the Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo, and the BMW M5. It achieved fame through Miami Vice, appearing in its third, fourth, and fifth seasons, and via the arcade game Out Run. The car is regarded as a hallmark of the yuppie era; its side strakes continue to be replicated on widebody kits to this day.
