⚖ Compare

The Testarossa Spider is the only official convertible version of the Testarossa. Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli commissioned it in 1986 to commemorate his 20 years at the helm of the conglomerate. The car was painted in Argento Nürburgring, featured a white, electrically operated soft top, and bore a solid silver emblem on the front lid; "Ag", the chemical symbol for silver, references Agnelli's name. Mechanically, it was identical to the standard Testarossa. Ferrari declined series production; instead, Pininfarina and aftermarket tuners offered unofficial conversions.

Good to know

  • Agnelli took delivery of the Spider within four months; the car's serial number is 62897.
  • The original car, owned by a friend of the Agnelli family, was auctioned off in 2016 for 1.3 million US dollars; it had covered 23,000 kilometers.
  • In the Sega game Out Run, a red Testarossa convertible is the hero car.

The one-off

The car was finished in Argento Nürburgring, with an interior trimmed in white Magnolia leather complemented by a dark blue stripe above the matte black sills. The white, electrically operated soft top could also be stowed manually. A solid silver Ferrari emblem adorned the front lid instead of an aluminum one. Mechanically, the car matched the European Testarossa with its 4.9-liter twelve-cylinder delivering 291 kW.

Transmission and windows

Beyond the missing roof, the windshield and the door side windows were shorter than on the standard Testarossa. It was also fitted with a transmission built by Valeo that could switch between automatic mode and the standard 5-speed manual at the push of a button—a technology ahead of its time. It was installed at the request of Agnelli, who suffered from a chronic leg injury.

Why no series production?

Despite numerous inquiries from interested clients, Ferrari rejected a series-production version of the Spider, citing packaging and structural challenges that would have been difficult to resolve. Consequently, Pininfarina and firms such as Straman, Pavesi, Lorentz and Rankl, and Koenig Specials offered unofficial Spider conversions on customer request.
