⚖ Compare

The Ferrari F14 T was Ferrari's first turbocharged race car since the F1/87/88C, succeeding the V8-powered F138. Its 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 with energy recovery replaced the 2.4-liter V8, with an eight-speed transmission among the other technical innovations. The name was chosen by fans in an online poll: the 14 represents the year, and the T stands for turbo. Driven by Fernando Alonso and the returning Kimi Räikkönen, the car remained winless and scored only two podiums, both by Alonso.

Good to know

  • The name "F14 T" received the most votes in the fan poll with 369,711; in leetspeak, it also resembles the word "Fiat."
  • Räikkönen returned to Ferrari after two years at Lotus Renault and a five-year absence.
  • It was the first Ferrari since the F93A not to score a Grand Prix victory.
  • The rear is painted black: this is intended to make sponsor logos more legible and conceal technical solutions.

Construction

The chassis was designed by James Allison, Pat Fry, Nikolas Tombazis, and Loïc Bigois, with Rory Byrne advising as design consultant and Luca Marmorini heading powertrain development. Due to regulation changes, the nose was significantly lower than its predecessor's. The chassis remained relatively high, causing the front to droop downward more sharply at front suspension level than on other cars. The front wing was suspended from two widely spaced pylons, and Ferrari retained pull-rod front suspension.

Powertrain

The new Tipo 059/3 V6 is a turbocharged engine with a 90-degree bank angle, complemented by MGU-K and MGU-H energy recovery systems. It features an eight-speed electronically controlled sequential semi-automatic transmission. Under the regulations, only a single central exhaust pipe above the rear rain light was permitted. Internally, the car was known under project code 665; it was unveiled on January 25, 2014, in Maranello.

Season and legacy

Despite the driver pairing of Alonso and Räikkönen, the F14 T proved unsuccessful, securing only two podium finishes, both achieved by Alonso. The livery paired classic red with more black than on the F138, separated by a thin Italian tricolor stripe, with white accents on the front wing. The car was playable in the video games F1 2014 and F1 2015, as well as in Real Racing 3.
