⚖ Compare

The short-lived 857 S of 1955 was intended to halt the formidable Mercedes-Benz team, which the 750 Monza and the 376 S/735 LM had failed to do. To this end, an existing 750 Monza chassis was fitted with a Lampredi four-cylinder enlarged to 3432 cm³ producing 280 PS. At the 1955 Tourist Trophy, this proved insufficient, prompting Lampredi to make a fresh start for the following season. Even so, Castellotti finished third overall at the 1955 Targa Florio, and in 1956 Olivier Gendebien and Phil Hill took second place at the Buenos Aires 1000 km.
