The 458 Speciale is the high-performance version of the 458 Italia and was showcased at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The engine was revised to produce 605 PS. New features include forged wheels, a vented hood, and movable active aerodynamic flaps at the front and rear that balance downforce and drag. It is the first Ferrari to feature side slip angle control. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds; only 1309 units were built.

Good to know

  • Ferrari states a lap time of 1:23.5 on the Fiorano test track, just 0.5 seconds slower than the F12berlinetta.
  • The interior lacks carpets; parts are trimmed in carbon fiber and Alcantara.
  • Lateral acceleration now reaches 1.33 g, and 0 to 200 km/h takes 9.1 seconds.
  • The power-to-displacement ratio is 135 PS per liter, with an unchanged displacement of 4.5 liters.

Aerodynamics and design

Compared to the standard 458 Italia, noticeable features include forged wheels, a vented hood, fins on the side skirts, a taller rear spoiler, and redesigned bumpers. The Ferrari Styling Centre designed the active aerodynamics together with Pininfarina: movable flaps at the front and rear balance downforce and drag depending on speed. Small turning vanes sit ahead of the rear wheel arches. Curb weight dropped to 1290 kg.

Side slip angle control

The Side Slip Angle Control system, or SSC, was a first for Ferrari. Among other parameters, it evaluates steering and drift angles as well as accelerator pedal position to recognize whether the driver intends to accelerate out of a corner exit in oversteer. The system continuously compares the slip angle with a target value and optimizes torque management via F1-Trac traction control, as well as torque distribution between the two rear wheels via the E-Diff electronic differential.

Performance

The revised engine produces 605 PS at 9000/min and 540 Nm at 6000/min. The Speciale accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and requires 9.1 seconds to reach 200 km/h. Following a press release on August 20, 2013, it was presented on September 12 at the Frankfurt Motor Show; 1309 units were built.
