The 348 replaced the 328 in 1989 and was the last V8 Ferrari developed under the direction of Enzo Ferrari. The 3.4-liter engine producing 300 PS was mounted longitudinally with a transverse gearbox—a first for a road-going Ferrari, inspired by the 312T Formula 1 car. Hence the "t" in tb and ts. Unlike the 328, it featured a monocoque body and an 11 cm longer wheelbase than the 308 GTB, making it roomier and stiffer. Visually, it leaned heavily on the styling of the Testarossa. 2894 units of the Berlinetta tb were built, alongside 4228 of the Targa ts.

Good to know

  • As with its predecessors, the model designation is derived from the displacement (3.4 liters) and the cylinder count (8).
  • It was the final design overseen by chief stylist Leonardo Fioravanti, who had also penned the F40, Daytona, 512 Berlinetta Boxer, 288 GTO, P5, and P6.
  • The side-mounted radiators made the doors very wide; however, the cabin stayed cooler because warm water pipes no longer ran underneath it.
  • Due to the dry-sump lubrication, the oil level could only be read accurately on the dipstick with the engine running.
  • According to the Italian spec sheet, the 348 accelerates from 0 to 200 km/h in 20.2 s and completes the standing 1000 meters in 24.7 s.

Electronics and updates

The 348 featured an engine management system with two Bosch Motronic computers, a dual-circuit ABS, and a self-diagnostic climate control and heating system. In 1990, the Motronic was updated from version 2.5 to 2.7. Later cars (1993 and beyond) received Japanese starters and Nippondenso alternators for improved reliability, as well as the battery relocated to the front left fender for better weight distribution.

Cooling and maintenance

As on the Testarossa, but unlike the 512 BB and 308/328, the oil and water radiators were moved from the front to the sides. Behind the large strakes in the doors sits a cooling fan on each side that channels air to the engine. The dry-sump lubrication prevents oil starvation at high speeds and under hard cornering. A height-adjustable suspension and a removable rear subframe sped up engine removal for servicing.

Design comparison

The straked side air intakes and rectangular taillights recall the Testarossa and the F40, which was the fastest production car in the world at the time. The taillights are covered by a black grille. The succeeding F355 returned to the lines of the 328, featuring circular taillights and rounded air intakes. Compared to the 308 GTB, the track is 4 cm wider.
