⚖ Compare

At the end of 1993, the 348 was revised and subsequently designated GTB and GTS. The 3.4-liter engine remained fundamentally the same, but received improved Motronic management and a new exhaust system, now producing 320 PS. The engine cover and side skirts were painted in body color, the suspension geometry was revised, and fuel tank capacity shrank to 88 liters. The open-top Spider appeared as early as 1993 featuring the same visual updates, arriving ahead of the closed GTB and GTS.

Good to know

  • The GTB and GTS were produced for barely a year; production ended in May 1994 after only 440 cars—222 Berlinetta and 218 Targa models.
  • The 348 Spider was unveiled simultaneously at the Geneva Motor Show and on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles in 1993.
  • For North America, output remained slightly lower at 312 hp compared to 320 PS for other markets.
  • Visually, there was a new front grille, a chrome Cavallino at the rear, and removable seat cushions.

The F119H engine

The engine was designated F119H, in contrast to the original F119D and the US-spec F119G. The compression ratio increased from 10.4:1 to 10.8:1, complemented by taller intake plenums, a larger compensation valve, and revised camshaft timing. Fuel pressure was raised from 3.4 to 3.8 bar. The result was 320 PS—312 hp in North America—featuring improved Bosch Motronic 2.7 management and a new exhaust system with a single muffler.

The Spider

The open-top Spider appeared in 1993 ahead of the closed models and was the first to receive the visual changes: body-colored lower skirts, a specially styled engine cover, and a manually folding soft top. The rear track was 50 mm wider than on the 348 tb. A new transverse gearbox with revised ratios was designed to improve acceleration and shift feel. Roughly six months later, the base models also adopted these changes and were renamed GTB and GTS.

Suspension

The suspension geometry was reworked, greatly improving handling, ride comfort, and body control. The rear track grew by one inch because the mating face on the inside of the rear wheels was thicker. The engine cover and lower side skirts were now painted in body color instead of black. The fuel tank held just 88 liters; this saved weight and freed up room for a stiffer structure.
