Vittorio Jano was an Italian automotive engineer of Hungarian descent. Mediated by Enzo Ferrari, he joined Alfa Romeo in 1923 and became chief engineer there; his Alfa Romeo P3 was campaigned very successfully in 1933 by Enzo Ferrari and his Scuderia. In 1955, Ferrari took over Lancia's Grand Prix program and with it Jano. At Ferrari, he developed a new V12 engine that replaced the previous four-cylinder engines in the sports cars, debuting in 1956 in the Ferrari 290 MM. Sports cars powered by Jano engines contributed to two titles in the World Sportscar Championship.
