The SF90 Stradale is Ferrari's first plug-in hybrid and was unveiled on May 29, 2019. Its name references the SF90 Formula 1 car and the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari; "Stradale" means "made for the road." A distinctive feature is the two-piece rear wing, which incorporates Formula 1's DRS drag-reduction system; Ferrari claims 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. The mid-mounted 3990 cm³ twin-turbo V8 is assisted by electric motors and powers all four wheels. Its successor is the 849 Testarossa.

Good to know

  • The front wheels are driven by two electric motors, which also provide reverse gear since the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission lacks one.
  • Head of Design Flavio Manzoni describes the styling as something between a spaceship and a race car.
  • The V8 sits 50 mm lower in the chassis than in Ferrari's other mid-engine V8 models.
  • Electric range with the 7.9 kWh battery is 16 miles.

Powertrain

The twin-turbo V8 is complemented by three electric motors producing a combined 220 PS; Ferrari cites a total output of 1000 PS at 7500 rpm. The engine is an evolution of the units used in the 488 Pista and F8 Tributo. Cylinder bores of 88 mm increased displacement to 3990 cm³. The cylinder heads are narrower, and the new central fuel injectors operate at 35 MPa. A smaller flywheel and an Inconel exhaust manifold are fitted.

Driving modes and battery

Four driving modes can be selected via the eManettino on the steering wheel. eDrive operates purely on electric power; Hybrid is the default mode, shutting off the engine under suitable conditions; Performance keeps the engine running to charge the battery; Qualify draws maximum output from the powertrain. The control logic works in tandem with the high-voltage components, the RAC-e torque vectoring system, and the MGUK.

Design and aerodynamics

The two-piece rear wing employs the F1 DRS concept: a fixed section houses the taillight, while movable elements, called the "Shut-off Gurney" by Ferrari, deploy electrically. The cab-forward design frees up space for the hybrid cooling radiators. Classic Ferrari design cues appear at the rear, such as flying buttresses, while the engine cover is kept as low as possible. The profile view is reminiscent of the 330 P3/4.
