The 360 Modena replaced the F355 in 1999, adopting an all-new aluminum frame developed by Ferrari jointly with Alcoa. It is 40 percent stiffer than the steel frames of previous models and 28 percent lighter, despite an overall dimensional increase of ten percent. The Pininfarina design moved away from the sharp edges and pop-up headlights of preceding years. The 3.6-liter V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft and titanium connecting rods delivers 400 PS at 8500/min and accelerates the car to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

Good to know

  • The 360 was the first Ferrari whose shape was created entirely with computer-aided surface modeling; Pininfarina used Alias software for the process.
  • Instead of a front radiator grille, the front features two separate air intakes at each corner; twin diffusers in the rear replace a rear spoiler.
  • The F1 gearbox shifts gears in 150 milliseconds and even includes a dedicated mode for snow and ice.
  • Of the 1810 Modena Coupés built for the US, only 469 had a manual transmission.

Design

Between 1995 and 1997, Ferrari commissioned Pininfarina to design an entirely fresh shape for the new aluminum chassis. Goran Popović styled it under the direction of Lorenzo Ramaciotti. The team explored several full-scale clay models, combining a curvaceous beltline with large side intakes and clear headlight covers, and refined the surfaces on the computer. The design was approved at the end of 1997 and frozen for production the following year.

Technical details

The V8 is a five-valve design: three intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder, with variable timing on the exhaust side. Compared to the F355, the engine gained only 14 kW (19 PS). With the F1 transmission, gears are selected via paddle shifters—up on the right, down on the left. There is no clutch pedal: the electronics engage the clutch only when the revs match. The Modena weighs 1365 kg, the Spider 1425 kg.

Variants and production numbers

The Modena was built first, followed later by the Spider and the special-edition Challenge Stradale. Worldwide, 8800 Modenas, 7565 Spiders, and 1288 Challenge Stradales were produced, with 4199 cars heading to the US. In addition, there were factory race cars: the 360 Modena Challenge was prepared by tuner Michelotto, who also developed the N-GT for the FIA class of the same name. For the first time, racing versions were a distinct model rather than a conversion kit. A single Barchetta was built based on the Spider.
