⚖ Compare

The Ferrari 340 America was the first model of the America series and was built from 1950 to 1952. Its Lampredi-designed twelve-cylinder hailed from Formula 1 and produced 220 PS; this made it significantly more powerful than the Colombo engine in the concurrently offered 212. Giovanni Michelotti designed the bodies, which were built by Vignale. A major success came in 1951: Luigi Villoresi won the Mille Miglia in a Vignale Berlinetta. The 375 America followed as its successor.

Good to know

  • The first two cars of the America series were converted 275 S models.
  • With 220 PS, the 340 America was considerably more powerful than the concurrently offered 212, whose Colombo V12 produced 160 PS.
  • Late examples received dry-sump instead of wet-sump lubrication.
  • In 1951, Villoresi won the Mille Miglia in the Vignale Berlinetta; three Touring Barchettas failed to finish that same year.

Technical details

The Lampredi V12 had a 70 mm bore and 68 mm stroke, three dual-choke Weber 40DCF carburetors, and an 8:1 compression ratio. It produced 162 kW (220 PS) at 6000/min. Mechanically, the chassis matched that of the 212, but the wheelbase was shortened to 2420 mm. The five-speed manual transmission was non-synchronized. Compared to the 118 kW (160 PS) of the 212's Colombo twelve-cylinder, it represented a substantial leap in performance.

Production numbers and coachwork

A total of 23 examples of the 340 America were built, several of which enjoyed success in motorsport. Eleven featured Vignale coachwork—five Coupés and six Barchettas—styled by Giovanni Michelotti. Of the remaining twelve, the German source counts seven by Touring and five by Ghia, whereas the English source lists eight by Touring and four by Ghia. The first two cars of the series were converted from the 275 S.
